When breastfeeding challenges arise or a fragile infant is at risk, pasteurized human donor milk offers a safe, lifesaving option for families in need. Every family deserves to have the freedom to choose what works best for them.

As the 4th of July approaches, here in the U.S. we start to think a lot about freedom. We watch fireworks, gather with family, and honor the idea that everyone deserves a fighting chance. We think about the freedoms we sometimes take for granted, the ability to make choices for ourselves and our loved ones, to access what we need, to ask for help and actually receive it. As parents, we think about the freedom to find the path that works best for our families. And we think about the families who are still fighting for those freedoms every day, in ways that don’t make the news but matter just as much.

But here at Mothers’ Milk Bank California, there’s another kind of freedom on our minds this time of year: the freedom to give your baby the very best start in life, no matter how their journey begins.

When the plan changes

You may have pictured the whole thing differently. Breastfeeding was going to be natural, bonding, beautiful – and then maybe it wasn’t. Maybe your milk didn’t come in. Maybe your baby arrived early and needed more than your body could provide. Maybe illness, medication, or sheer exhaustion made it impossible to breastfeed, or you made the difficult decision to stop because it just didn’t feel right.

You are not alone. Despite what society might want you to believe, you haven’t failed as a parent. The truth is, feeding a newborn is one of the most challenging things a new parent faces. Breastfeeding is a skill for both parent and baby, and sometimes, despite every effort, it simply doesn’t go as planned. That doesn’t mean your baby has to miss out on the benefits of human milk.

We hear from so many of our milk recipients that when feeding challenges arise, they find themselves carrying an unexpected burden of disappointment, frustration, or even guilt. Yet feeding your baby isn’t about meeting a perfect standard. It’s about ensuring your baby receives the nourishment they need to grow and thrive. That’s why having options matters!

The gift of donor milk

This is where the remarkable work of milk banks comes in. Pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM), provided by generous mothers who have more than enough for their own babies, offers a lifeline to babies and families in need. It’s not a compromise. It’s a genuine act of love, from one mother to another, that can make all the difference.

Donor milk is especially critical for:

  • Premature and hospitalized infants who are too fragile for formula
  • Babies with allergies or feeding difficulties that make formula unsafe
  • Families navigating illness, adoption, or low supply who want the benefits of human milk

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), less than half of infants under six months old are exclusively breastfed, which means that more than half of the infant population needs donor milk to have the best possible chance at fighting disease, infection, allergies, sickness, and more. Every ounce of donated milk saves lives, strengthens babies’ immune systems, and is scientifically-proven to support growth and development from day one. Mothers’ Milk Bank exists so that no family has to face those challenges alone, and no baby goes without the nourishment they deserve.

This Independence Day, you have the power to extend freedom to another family, or to discover it for your own.

Become a milk donor

If you’re a breastfeeding mom with an abundant supply, consider donating your extra milk. By doing so, you provide essential nutrition for fragile and premature infants. For babies whose mothers cannot produce enough or are unable to breastfeed, donor milk is a meaningful option that supports healthy growth and gives every baby the best possible start in life. The screening process is thorough but straightforward, and the impact is profound. Your surplus could sustain a premature baby in the NICU, support a mother recovering from surgery, or give a struggling family the breathing room and sense of freedom they desperately need.

Receive donor milk

Donor milk offers all of the benefits of a mother’s own milk. It promotes brain development, lowers respiratory infections, has easy digestibility, acts like a vaccine by transferring antibodies, and lowers the risk of asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), obesity, and type 2 diabetes. If you’re a parent, medical provider or hospital, reach out today to get lifesaving nutrients for your baby or a baby in your care.

This July, we hope you’ll celebrate the freedom to feed your baby – whatever that looks like for your family. Every baby deserves a fighting chance, and you should never have to fight alone.
