Every September, we observe NICU Awareness Month to shine a light on the specialized care provided to our most vulnerable newborns—and the dedicated clinical teams that support them. NICU nurses, neonatologists, and lactation consultants are the backbone of neonatal care, working tirelessly to give fragile infants the best possible start.
At Mothers’ Milk Bank California, we’re proud to support these teams by providing safe, pasteurized donor human milk to NICUs across California and beyond. This year, we’re marking NICU Awareness Month by expanding donor access services to meet the sharp rise in demand for donor milk—driven in part by the passage of California Assembly Bill 3059 earlier this year.
That means:
Regular Milk Pick-Ups: Year-round service available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., in Alameda, Santa Clara, and San Mateo counties.
Weekend Donor Screenings: New donor screenings now offered Saturdays and Sundays, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., increasing convenience for busy families.
Expanded Accessibility: Screenings available by phone or video, with professional medical interpretation in over 200 languages through the Language Line.
As the oldest continuously operating nonprofit milk bank in the U.S. and a proud member of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA), we are committed to reducing barriers and growing a more inclusive donor community—because donor milk isn’t just nourishment; it’s neonatal care.
